Update

Yes this blog is still active and am still repairing computers. Though i totally understand if you have wondered based on the lack of updates to this blog. :)

Started a new job as a software developer in September 2011. In this new gig I’ve been able to work on an enterprise-level web application that handles 1000s of requests a second. The application is well written and changes in functionality are made quickly because of its design.

My main responsibility has been rewriting and adding new functionality to the admin/configuration tool for this enterprise app. I have been using ASP.NET MVC2 along with AJAX, Telerik control extensions for ASP.NET with Visual Studio 2010 Professional as the IDE. Its been a great experience thus far! I’ve learned much and am thankful for this opportunity!

Microsoft Security Essentials Upgrade Issues – XP

For the past few days, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on my home machine has wanted to update to a newer client version. I kept giving it the go ahead, but it would constantly fail. Reboot the machine, it would be fine, then prompt to upgrade again, repeat and fail.  I would also try to install the update on shut down, but it wouldn’t take.

So after searching to see if this was a common issue (apparently it is), I finally got it working right.

The fix (hopefully)?

1. Download the latest version of MSE and save the file on your machine.

2. Remove MSE using Add/Remove Programs (if it doesn’t work, try rebooting (if you have updates to install, then choose ‘Shut Down & Install Updates).  Then start the machine and as soon as it’s up, try uninstalling it.

3. Reboot

4. Run the file that was downloaded in step 1 and that’ll get it updated.

Up until today (I think anyway), the version of MSE that you could download was the outdated version. That has now changed and the current version is available.

Hope that helps.

What Techs Sometimes Think About

I love Dilbert. There are many truths that are shown in the comic. The following truth I have experienced and I’m sure the majority, if not all techs have experienced at some point in their career.
